What is a caravan? Is a caravan license required?

A caravan is a living space that can be transported to any desired location by means of a towing or on-board motor vehicle produced for many purposes. The caravan driving license has entered the literature with the driving license class regulation compatible with the European Union.

It is a driving license type whose name changes depending on the vehicle you attach it to, for example, if it is a class B vehicle it is called BE, if it is a class C vehicle it is called CE, and if it is a class D vehicle it is called DE.

Since caravans are generally towed by B class vehicles in our country, it would be more accurate to classify the caravan driving license as a BE class driving license. (For non-towing motorhomes, a driver’s license must be held according to the truck, minibus, etc. driving license class of the relevant vehicle, depending on its loaded weight.)

BE Class Driving License

BE class driving license is the document required to drive a B class car with a trailer or caravan with a carrying capacity of over 750 kg attached to the back. Drivers with a BE class driving license can travel with their caravans or trailers on all urban and intercity roads.

Trailer License

You can tow trailers with a loaded weight of less than 750 kg by attaching them to the relevant vehicle without the E suffix such as BE, CE, DE etc. However, if you are going to use a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 750 kg, you must have a BE driving licence if it is a Class B car, a CE driving licence if it is a Class C truck, and a CE driving licence if it is a Class D bus.

Do I have to get a BE Class Driving License – Caravan Driving License – Trailer Driving License?

If you are going to use a trailer or caravan weighing over 750 kg, you must definitely obtain this type of license. When you change your license to a new type of license, you can find out whether you are authorized to drive a BE class vehicle. If you have obtained a class E license before 1997 or a class D truck license as it was called before, you are considered to have a BE class license. You will not need to obtain a different license again.
